Best Features of Walking Sandals

Here are some important features you need to consider for your walking sandals.

Lightweight

If you’re going to use your walking sandals for backpacking or hiking then they need to be lightweight. While walking sandals are not really recommended for rough terrain, they are ideal and very comfortable to wear when you’re hiking in hot weather or in humid locations.

For rough terrain they can be packed inside your backpack so that you can switch to hiking boots instead. This is why lightweight sandals are ideal. Lightweight also means that they won’t put unnecessary pressure on your joints since they weigh less.

Arch Support and Cushioning

Some women wear their walking sandals all day not just during walks and hikes but for errands too. For women who are always on their feet, sandals with good arch support and cushioning is a must. Sandals with good arch support can help hikers walk on trails more comfortably.

Cushioning is also important because it bears the weight of the wearer. It should not be too soft or too hard. Good cushioning should be supportive and flexible at the same time.

Shock Resistance

Shock resistance helps to protect the wearer’s joints and prevent pain. When your foot hits the ground it gets a jolt of high impact shock. A sandal that is shock absorbent is efficient in absorbing the energy that results from the impact so that it does not wear away your joints.

Try to look for walking sandals made with ethylene vinyl acetate (EVA) or foam mid soles as they absorb shock really well.

Fit

Walking sandals that have adjustable straps can be a life saver when your feet get swollen from walking all day. This is why your sandals or shoes feel tight after a long walk or trek.

Using the adjustable straps, you can adjust fit easily so that you feel stable and secure in your sandals. Adjustable straps also come in handy during times you want to wear thick woolen socks with your sandals. The straps will give you room for your warm socks.

Waterproof

Hardcore hikers don’t let puddles, brooks or bodies of water stand in the way of getting to their destination.

However, walking on wet sandals can be very uncomfortable so you should consider waterproof materials for better comfort. If you need waterproofing, look for walking sandals that are made from rubber soles and synthetic uppers.

Quick Drying

Speaking of bodies of water, it is inevitable during your trek or hike that your sandals get wet. If they are not waterproof they should at least be quick-drying. We all know how uncomfortable it is to walk on wet sandals. Aside from this, the wetness also causes chaffing and blisters which can make you more uncomfortable.

With quick drying sandals, you can wait for them to dry out while you rest and then continue with your trek once they are dry. The best quick drying sandals get dry within 20 minutes.

Toe Protection

Not all sandals offer toe protection but it can come in handy especially when trekking in rocky terrain. Some sandals have more open construction which exposes the feet and toes to rocks, tree root and debris. Consider toe protection for rocky destinations.

Soles

Walking sandals need sturdy soles for stability and traction. The best thing about walking sandals is the ability to hike using them which is unadvisable if you’re wearing flip flops. Check your walking sandals if it has good treads or lugs.

Style is very important to women but walking sandals need to be functional too. Here are reviews of some of the best walking sandals for women.

Wrap Up

If you have to walk, you might as well be comfortable. Choosing a good walking sandal will not only make you look stylish during your trek but will also help take care of your feet specially as you tackle the miles going to your destination.

Always remember to choose a pair that is comfortable especially if you have to spend the whole day in them. Good quality walking sandals can mean the difference between an enjoyable hike and a painful one so make sure that you prioritize comfort and arch support.

  1. I think that arch support is key when one is searching for the right sandal to be on the go in. It is the safest and most comfortable thing that you can do for your feet. Around here, we have a ton of people who wear Birkenstocks. So that would be my go to, well I should say is my go to, since I have a couple pairs. After that it is just a question of strap placement and whether or not they’re adjustable.

  2. I agree with you Zoey. Having ample support is important to protect our feet and back from aching. You wouldn’t believe that some chronic pain we experience is due to ill-fitting shoes and the wrong kinds of shoes. Sandals are great for walking, but it is necessary to choose from reputable brands.

  3. The Dansko Priya are adorable! I absolutely love them. They look so cute and comfortable-especially the soles and that to me is an extremely important function of a sandal! I do wonder how well they work on long walks without a back foot strap? Would they really stay on your feet and keep you from slipping or falling?
