Things to Consider Before Buying

There are a few things to keep in mind when you decide to shop for a good camping pillow. Read on below for the important features and learn about how pillows can be a helpful accessory while you enjoy the outdoors.

Cushion and Support

You’ll want something to cushion your head and protect it from small twigs and stones. Second of all, bugs. You’re in the wild, so it’s impossible for you to bubble wrap your tent from nature.

Thirdly, pillows, in general, are extremely important for supporting and aligning your back. You may think they were just for your head, but you’re mistaken. Pillows support the natural curve of your neck and spine, so if you don’t have one, you’re going to suffer the aches and pains the next day.

Types of Pillows

There are two types of camping pillows that are available. You don’t want to take your home pillow with you, it can easily get dirty and you want a pillow that’s easy to travel with.

Compressible Pillows

These pillows are ideal for camping, road trips and backpacking adventures. You don’t have to sacrifice your comfort in order to go on a wild journey. These pillows are easily foldable and can be rolled up into the size of a water bottle.

All you do is take them out of their sleeve and they expand into a full-size camping pillow. They can come in waterproof or non-waterproof sleeves, however, usually they’re machine washable so that’s not a problem.

Inflatable Pillows

These pillows are basically blow-up pillows. You can reduce them to the size of your palm by deflating them. They’re great because you can control the firmness of your pillow by the amount of air you pump or blow into it.

They’re waterproof, easy to store, and extremely transportable. They usually have one side with fabric so that your head doesn’t slide off in the middle of the night.

Pillow Material

Consider the material in which the pillow is made. It should be comfortable and soft, so that you can rest your head at the end of a long day outdoors. If your pillow does not include any cloth fabric, consider putting your own pillow case over it for maximum comfort.

Also, you need to keep an eye on the material and know if you are allergic to it or not. You don’t want your good night’s rest to turn into a nightmare!

Sleeping Type

You’ll want a pillow for your head that’ll support your head, the curve of your neck and your shoulders. It’s also a good idea to have a small pillow placed under the back of your knees to reduce stress on your spine. It will also support the curve of your lower back.

Sleeping on your stomach is probably the worst position to sleep in, but if you do, there are ways to reduce the stress that’s placed on your back. You want to place a flat pillow under your stomach and pelvis area to help align your spine. Your pillow for your head should also be flat.

If you’re a fetal position sleeper, then you’ll want to place a pillow between your knees to reduce the chance of misaligning your spine. It will also reduce the stress that’s placed on your hips, back, and lower back. The pillow for your head should be designed to straighten your spine.

All the comfort and fluffiness will matter nothing if the size of the pillow you plan on buying is not suitable for you and your sleeping habits. Make sure you check the size charts before ordering.

Sometimes, the pillow you are considering might sound great, and probably is, but when you open the package, you can discover that it is too small. On the other hand, having a pillow that is too big can also be seen as a problem because of the free space in your backpack, or you can hardly fit it in your sleeping bag.

4 thoughts on “Best Camping Pillow: Sleeping Well at Night in The Outdoors”

  1. The Sea to Summit Aeros is absolutely the best camping/backpacking pillow designed to date. I have tried dozens, and this one gives me a good nights sleep. It is thick enough and firm enough to keep my head comfortably off the ground (I’m a side sleeper with broad shoulders). Great price point. Super easy to inflate and deflate. I can’t recommend this pillow enough to you, TRY IT!

  2. This pillow is tops on our list, too. Very comfortable and easy to use. The synthetic fill in between the pillows absorb moisture so it’s great to use in the summer, too. I love the polyester material of this one and certainly worth the price. After walking for miles, it’s important to have a good night’s sleep and this pillow can help with that.

  3. Before, I only had a pad with a built in pillow. It was good for car camping and was not too spacious. But as I grew older, my sleep was better if I had at least one more pillow. Now, I have this Therm-a-Rest Compressible Pillow (size small) which is compact enough to take backpacking and small enough to fit into my stuff sack with my tent and sleeping bag. It is totally machine washable and super comfy, so I don’t mind bringing it always when camping.

  4. Great product and I’m glad you are pleased with it. I can’t say it enough but after walking for hours, it’s good to rest your head in a comfortable pillow. A good night’s sleep is necessary to have a restful sleep.
