CrossFit is a sports category which involves a variety of movements across an array of activities. Movements could range from running, bodyweight exercises such as push-ups, pull-ups to weightlifting movements like the snatch as well as clean and jerk. Therefore, the best crossfit shoes should be suitable to let you do all types of activities, from running, lifting, climbing, jumping, pulling or pushing.

One of the greatest challenges sports companies have to manage when designing and producing a hybrid shoe for crossfit is satisfying several different factors: provide stability for weight training and also be comfortable and flexible enough for cardio exercises and running.

Hence, crossfit shoes don’t just have to meet the demands of the sport, they also have to provide the athlete with optimal support and comfort.

Consider The Following When Shopping

Whether you’re buying crossfit shoes for men or women, there are similar features you should consider. Below we put together a list with the most important features for crossfit shoes.

Comfort

No matter what type of footwear you’re buying, this is the criteria that should be at the top of your list. This is more so when you’re looking for a pair of crossfit shoes as ill-fitting shoes will compromise your performance.

crossfit shoes comfort while lifting

While we can’t really tell you what comfort is, since that is subjective, there are actually some aspects you can look out. For example the overall shape of the shoe that could potentially rub in the wrong way and cause discomfort, how absorptive the inner sole is and how well the shoe is able to breathe.

Support and protection

This takes into consideration how much stability the shoe can offer throughout your workouts. Also, how the shoes can keep you from injuries during movements such as rope climbs, box jumps or double unders.

The sole of the shoe is an important aspect to look at when determining how much support you could be getting from your crossfit shoes. Look at how stiff the heel is to counter your weight and your movements. Will they absorb the necessary amount of impact?

Are the shoes designed to protect your ankles and feet during lateral movement? Is it made of strong outer lining and perhaps has a higher back design to protect the back of your foot? If the answers to these questions are positive, you’re looking at one of the best shoes for crossfit you could get.

Sensitivity

This means how effectively your crossfit shoes can let you feel the ground during movement. It’s important to feel the ground as that will let you know where you’re putting the most pressure. This is especially crucial in weightlifting where every movement is calculated and the athlete needs to be fully aware of his body movement.

Sensitivity also refers to the responsiveness of the shoes. This is important as crossfit demands you to move swiftly through a variety of movements. Think about whether it’s flexible enough for you to quickly change direction when you need to during your workouts.

Weight of shoes

Crossfit involves a lot of jumping, running or quick movements. Nobody would like to feel as if they’re wearing a ball and chain during workouts. That said it’s important to take note that the crossfit shoes of your choice have sufficient cushioning and good impact absorption for protection during high-impact runs or workouts.

Activity levels

By knowing how frequently you work out will help you narrow down your choice based on the shoes’ durability. If you’re an average crossfitter who typically works out three or four days a week, you may not need to spend that much to buy a top-end pair.

However, if you’re into competitive sports training or generally want to push your performance limits, buying the most durable pair (and spending a little more), that would last you a little longer throughout your frequent and intensive training, makes sense.

Heel-to-toe drop

This refers to the difference between the height of your heel and height of your forefoot. The best crossfit shoes are those with the smallest or zero heel-to-toe drop – almost like going barefooted.

So how can you tell that the shoes have a zero heel-to-toe drop? When your foot is nestled firmly in your shoe and your heel and ball of your forefoot are of the same height off the ground, you have a zero drop pair of shoes. The smaller the heel-to-toe drop, the easier it is for you to land on your midfoot. This means that your step is stable and firm and the risk of hurting your feet, ankles, knees and back is minimized.

I generally have problems with most running shoes, but Nike 5.0 TR Fit 4 Print Cross are the best training shoes I’ve ever had! They are extremely comfortable and a lot of ventilation for your feet.. Many people say that Nike runs small but I got my normal size and they fit perfectly! They provide great support and forces good posture 🙂

  • Mark Foster

Yup, everyone loves their Nikes! Can I blame you guys? No! It’s an excellent brand and they always come up with the latest innovation to make it easier to be fit. Price- wise, it can be hefty but, hey, it’s Nike!

  • Joe McGowan

I’m currently wearing a pair of F-Lite 235’s for Crossfit. The shoes are very light and flexible yet comfortable too. I have had two pairs of these though, as the first pair had an issue with a hole around the toes of the shoe. Luckily for me, Inov-8’s customer service was incredibly helpful and replaced the pair with no hassle though it does make me wonder about the durability of these shoes. Has anyone else ran into any issues?

  • Mark Foster

A hole, ey? How did that occur? Or did you receive your shoes with a hole already? As far as I know, those shoes are durable. In this instance, though, I don’t have an idea how the hole came about, but glad the customer service people were decent to replace your pair immediately. 🙂
