Best Sleeping Bag Liner: A Guide For Restful Sleep

If you’re a frequent backpacker, camper or traveler you may be familiar with others talking about sleeping bag liners. The best sleeping bag liner has 2 primary uses. First as an added layer of protection for your sleeping bag and prevent dirt and body oil contamination.

Secondly, bag liners can add 5° to 15°F of warmth to your sleeping bag rating, keeping you toasty warm when camping in low temperatures or high altitude. In warm climate and high temperatures, some bag liners can be used independently from sleeping bags to keep you cool and comfortable.

When looking for a good bag liner, you need to consider 2 things: the type of bed liner and the material used.

Types of Sleeping Bag Liners

Basically, there are 2 types of sleeping bag liners: rectangular and mummy-shaped.

Rectangular sleeping bag liners are more versatile than mummy-shaped ones. Some of them can be unzipped so that they can be used as blankets. Rectangular bag liners can also be used as standalone sleeping bags in warm temperatures or sleeping bag liners for added warmth and comfort. Also known as travel sheets, they can be used outside the camping setting in places like the airport, hostels, hotels (for bed bug infestation protection) or even at home. Rectangular bed liners are ideal choices for travelers or those that want versatility or the blanket option.

Mummy-shaped sleeping bag liners on the other hand are designed for warmth and insulation. They are narrow at the shoulders and hips to mold into the user’s shape for added comfort during cold nights. They are designed to slip inside any kind of sleeping bags even rectangular ones. Depending on the material used, some mummy shaped liners can add warmth to your sleeping bag rating. This type of bed liner is a good choice for campers, backpackers and hikers.

Now that you know what type of sleeping bag liner you should buy, you need to think about the material of the liner. Material has a big impact on your comfort because it can either keep you from freezing to death or make you overheat. Here are some of the most popular bed liner materials to consider.

Sleeping Bag Liner Material/Fabric

Are you going to use your sleeping bag for traveling or sleeping in cold weather? Do you need a bag liner to increase your sleeping bag rating? The material used for your liner can greatly impact your choice of bag liner material.

Silk

Very lightweight with some bed liners weighing a very light 5 oz. Silk feels luxurious and keeps you warm during cold weather and cool in hot temperatures. It is super absorbent too. The only downside to silk is the price as it is usually very expensive compared to other materials.

Cotton

Good bed liner material and is more affordable than silk. It is durable, absorbent and breathable. However, cotton is heavy to carry and can’t be packed down to a small size.

Fleece and microfleece

Good choices if you plan to camp in cool temperatures. It can add up to 12°F to your sleeping bag rating. The material feels soft and comfortable to the skin and is moisture-wicking and quick-drying.

Fleece sleeping bag liner

It is also easy to maintain. However, some fleece sleeping bag liners are bulky. These types of liners are moderately priced.

Synthetic materials

Are great for restless sleepers because it is a stretchy material. It is moisture wicking and breathable making them good choices for camping in warm temperature or humid conditions. These liners are moderately priced.

Insulated material

Enable campers to sleep in cold temperatures or high altitude by adding up to 25°F of warmth. The secret of the liner is in the hollow-core fiber insulation which helps users to retain their body heat.

Another advantage to using insulated materials as bed liner is their quick-drying property which allows the bag liner to dry 50% faster than cotton. Most insulated liners are on the moderate-expensive price range.

New sleeping bag liner

Considering the type of sleeping bag liner and material used for construction will easily narrow down your choices. Most of the time, it usually boils down to “how am I going to use my bag liner”?

Here are some sleeping bag liners for your consideration.

In Conclusion

Keeping sleeping bags clean during camping or backpacking can be a pain. Most of us don’t wash our sleeping bags that often and a bag liner can keep maintenance down and comfort levels up.

A good sleeping bag liner should keep you warm, clean and comfortable at night. If you have anything to say about the products we’ve recommended or want to suggest a sleeping bag liner we’ve neglected to mention, please leave a comment below.

  1. The Friendly Swede’s name always makes me giggle but they definitely picked something that would stick in a person’s head! Plus they make some really great stuff. I like using mine on long camping trips, usually longer than just a couple days over the weekend. I use my sleeping bag quite often, especially in the summer. So having a quality liner is super important to me. I haven’t gone wrong with this one. It’s pretty amazing and super comfortable.

  2. I like to bring a liner and a mat. I can’t just sleep on the cold, hard ground like I could when I was younger. I need some padding! The liner is really great, though, because sometimes I can just sleep on the bag and use the liner by itself. I usually have to be in the sleeping bag, though, because summer around here is pretty short!

I’ve been asked before if I do use a sleeping bag liner and the answer is yes. These liners are great protective barriers between the ground and my sleeping bag. They keep my sleeping bag in tiptop shape plus they add to the insulation , especially during cold weather.

  4. During summer, we usually sleep on a hammock when it’s too warm. But we also like to just lie on the liner or get a sleeping back that’s suitable for warmer weather. These sleeping liners are great to use and it also keeps our sleeping bags cleaner – that’s for sure!
