It is not uncommon for hiking enthusiasts to suffer from terrible blisters and foot aches, therefore they need the insoles that are specifically made to support and fit their feet so they wouldn’t feel any discomfort.

Are you looking for the perfect insoles of high quality that would make your outdoor activities more comfortable? If the answer is yes, then keep reading because in this article we are going to take a look at the best insoles for hiking that would make your life easier.

Types of Insoles and Most Important Features

As you probably already know, an insole is a removable layer of a specially made cloth that is put inside a shoe in order to provide support and extra comfort. Depending on your health, you might need it even if you do not exercise much or hike, especially if you have foot problems.

Types of Insoles

However, if you are a hiking enthusiast, it is recommended to purchase the insoles of high quality so you can enjoy your walking (that can last for hours or even days) properly.

Hiking requires lots of strength and it is our joints, ankles and knees that suffer the most, so you should try to alleviate the pain as much as you can – and the hiking insoles of high quality can certainly do that!

  • Comfort Insoles are for people who get tired easily from standing or walking and need comfort insoles to provide relief to their feet. These insoles are designed for casual shoes mostly and they can be bought almost anywhere. They are also cheaper than support or sport insoles because they are made of softer foam.
  • Support or Sport Insoles are the ones you will need for hiking. They are made to sustain increased pressure and they are also made of hard foam that provides not only comfort but support as well. This type of insoles is recommended not only to people who exercise but also to those who suffer from splayed feet, structural misalignment and other ailments.
  • Custom orthotics are designed for specific foot problems and you usually need to consult your therapist before purchasing them.

Speaking of volume and material, the insoles can be made of:

  • High-volume material that consists of hard foam and
  • Low-volume material that is made of soft foam.

The insoles can come in a variety of sizes and colors, but the most important thing to remember is that is you are looking for hiking insoles, then you need to search for the ones that are made of harder foam and that can support your footwear and give relief to your aching feet.

Do not settle for the cheaper brands or the ones that are not designed for outdoor activities such as hiking because you might regret it and end up being in pain during the whole day, and nobody wants that.

Air vs. Gel vs. Foam Insoles: Which One to Choose?

When it comes to the quality of insoles, it is certainly the material that is the most important.

Choose your hiking insoles

Let’s see the differences between the air, gel and foam insoles.

  • Gel insoles are used to provide extra cushioning and support to your feet and the gel is usually in a liquid bubble form. This type of material is great if you are looking for durability and pain relief; however, you should keep in mind that gel is denser and heavier than other materials and might slow you down.
  • Air insoles are in a form of pressurized air bubbles that can be found in a foam sole. They provide maximum cushioning and are quite lightweight. They are also able to protect your shoes so you can wear them longer than usual.
  • Foam is the most common type of material used for filling up insoles. It is dependable and rigid and also affordable. What makes it great is that it provides the maximum support and reduced injuries because it prevents your body from weighting on your feet completely. However, the foam compresses after a few months and becomes useless.

So which one to choose? As you can see, each one of these materials has a list of pros and cons, which means that you should choose the one that fits your requirements the most.

It is not the same if you require the insoles to make your everyday walking more comfortable or if you require a pair of insoles for hiking and athletic performances.

Superfeet insoles have the hard plastic bottom. Contrary to what seems logical, that is the most healthy shock absorption for your feet. During the run, a high arch collapses and the Superfeet will actually help hold up the arch during the collapse. My feet just love these.

For something so affordable, it really pampers your feet by giving you the best hike ever. It’s superior materials, innovative features and durability makes this a crowd pleaser. Good choice Beatris! 🙂

I’d highly recommend the Green Superfeet insoles. As a company, they know a thing or two about feet support and care! Trekked up Rinjani in Lombok and at every rest point, all you’d see is a sea of varying colours of Superfeet insoles (Green was, by far, the most popular) with a small smattering of other branded insoles. Each colour is suitable for different types of feet so I’d say find a retailer; take your hiking boots in; and try on a few different insoles for size. They’ll no doubt be able to point you in the right direction!

Those high value foam works wonders, I must say! For those who have allergies with latex, good news – these are latex-free and the coating is quite odorless. This is a great brand coming from a trusted manufacturer who has been in the business for 40 years!
