Best camp chairs

Camping chairs are an essential part of most outdoor activities. In recent past, people were only interested in lightweight, portable and easy-to-carry camp chairs. But over the years, our needs have transformed and there are now a lot more features to be considered when picking out camping chairs.

The best camping chairs will generally depend on your own specific needs and preferences but there are certain features that we have come to expect from all of them. The camping chair you choose will not necessarily possess all of the features and qualities but it must have a combination of just enough to serve you well and for a very long time.

The three basic qualities that every camping chair must possess are comfort, durability and ease of use. If the chair is lacking in any of these qualities, then it is not worth your hard-earned money. There will be certain trade-offs as no single chair can have all these qualities at the same level but the compromise of any quality should be at the minimum.

Features To Consider When Choosing The Right Chair

This is perhaps the most important thing to look out for in a camping chair. You want to pick out a chair that is very comfortable for you to sit on for extended periods of time. This is especially important if your camping trip will involve a lot of in-between stops for you to rest.

Comfortable camping chairs

Generally the chair must have the right build, design and materials to give you the best comfort. Ventilation is also key, as you don’t want to sweat all over it, but should also provide just enough protection against any chilly winds.

There is no point investing in a chair, no matter how good it seems, if it will only last you for just one season. You want a chair durable enough to be your camping buddy for multiple seasons. With this in mind, it is wiser to stay away from the very cheap, lower-end chairs, as they aren’t built to last as long as the higher-end ones. Higher-end chairs might be a little bit pricier, but they will stick around for the long haul.

The best camping chairs are made of very durable and sturdy materials which offer durability and doesn’t compromise on comfort either. This chair will typically have an built-in support system that helps them endure more stress than your average chairs.

Camping chairs in the water

The best camping chair must also be built to withstand all weather conditions and support the right amount of weight without falling apart in a very short time.

Ease of Use

This is another very important aspect of a camping chair. A very good camping chair must be easy to use. It must not add to your stress levels when it comes to assembly or collapsing. Moving it around and folding it back up should also be very easy and straightforward. In essence, it must be ready to deploy and ready to go in a matter of seconds.

You want a chair that doesn’t delay your other activities. It must be easy to carry around after setting up because you might want to change your position after sitting down, perhaps to evade smoke coming from a camp fire for example, so you need an easy to use and easy to carry chair.

Ease of use

You also want to go for chairs that don’t require assembly and can easily be snapped open and closed. Not all chairs are this way but if you can find ones like this, they are way easier to use.

Special Features

In addition to the 3 main considerations that have been discussed above, it wouldn’t hurt to go for a chair that has certain special features installed on it to make your life easier. They may add to the overall weight and size of the chair, which can compromise the portability, so don’t go all out on a chair that has too many special features.

Extra storage, storage pockets and cup holders are sweet. It helps you reduce your trips to and from your tent and /or backpack because you can easily put the items you frequently use, such as your cell phones, keys, books etc., in the storage spaces provided. This feature keeps all your necessities close to you so you can stay put in your chair for as long as you want.

Also consider built-in headrest and armrests. It is very easy to bring along an extra pillow to use as your headrest, but it is even easier to simply invest in a camp chair that has an built-in headrest. This makes it much more comfortable to rest on.

Use of camping chairs

Also as for armrests, there are some camping chairs that do not have this feature and it is easy to assume there is no need for it, but they are very important. You might not appreciate the need for them until you really need a place to rest your arms.

There are so many other extra features that chair manufacturers now equip their chairs with and they keep coming up with more and more innovations; some other important special features include: adjustable position, canopy or shade, foot rests.

Types of Camping Chairs

It is very easy to assume that there are no differences between the different kinds of camping chairs commercially available but this is not the case at all. Camping chairs will generally fall under one of these categories:

  • Traditional camping chairs
  • Portable chairs
  • Backpacking chairs

Traditional Camping Chairs

Camping chairs that are more traditional are more comfortable, considering the extra back support and how much higher off the ground they are. However, they can be a lot more bulky.

Traditional camping chairs

So if you wish to lounge and you don’t mind the extra space that these chairs will take up in your car or backpack, then this category will suit you well. They are also easy to set up and collapse and they won’t significantly delay any of your activities.

Portable Chairs

As the name suggests, these chairs are smaller, weigh less and are easier to carry around.

Portable chairs

However to achieve its portability, they take a lot more time to assemble and are less comfortable compared to the traditional chair. If space or weight is an issue for you, this chair is the right choice.

Backpacking Chairs

This category is even more portable and lightweight compared to the portable chairs. This class prioritizes size over all other features so they are generally easier to carry about.

Backpacking Chairs

The rest of this article will review some of the best camping chairs and each may fall under any of the above mentioned categories each with its own unique features.

Camping chairs

It won’t have all these qualities to the max because of certain trade-offs between them but it should still have them nonetheless.

Daniel Carraway joined our team last year. He is a gear freak when it comes to hiking, climbing and camping. He went to REI Outdoor School to meet new people and learn best practices. Don’t even try to argue with him about the latest backpack or ice axe, he tried most of them. Daniel’s dream is to climb Mount Everest.

I shopped around for a long time before deciding on Kijaro Dual Lock Folding Chair. It’s very sturdy. The quality of the material is superior to all the other chairs I have seen. The hanging pouch is a little small and tight, but zips up. When camping I have too much stuff to keep track of, phone, drink, keys, etc. This keeps all the stuff in one place. It is heavier, but quality items usual weigh more.

  • Daniel Carraway

Hi Elliot! That’s a good choice and yes, it’s quite sturdy so you need not worry about it breaking down or collapsing while you’re sitting on it. Depending on the duration of my trips, I have several camping chairs. My ultimate favorite is the Quik Chair Heavy Duty Folding Camp Chair. I’m a heavy guy and this chair supports my frame remarkably well. I also like the arm rests and cup holder since I love a good cup of coffee with my breakfast. Nevertheless, the Kijaro Dual Lock Folding Hair is a good choice, glad you like it!

  • Carl Thompson

I really like the Coleman Coleman Oversized Quad Chair with Cooler. They are perfect for camping or the beach. I would argue that they are male friendly, and I say that only because they are a bit wider and heavier than traditional folding chairs. If you are carrying them a few feet from the car to a camp site, anyone could manage it. I would argue that if you have a bit of a walk on your hands, they could be cumbersome for a smaller person. At the end of the day, how can you go wrong with a chair that has a cooler built into the arm?

  • Daniel Carraway

The Coleman Oversized Quad Chair with Cooler is really great if you just want to lounge. As for the weight, it is a bit heavy and not for those who can’t handle the added weight. Nice to transport on short distances and the cooler feature is just way awesome!
