When you are camping, there are so many considerations to take into account if you wish to make the most out of your trip. One of the most important aspects of camping is comfort. A cold, cramped night’s sleep is definitely not a good way end a day at the camp.

Fortunately, comfort is not in short supply provided that you have the suitable sleeping bag. Camping is always a good time and it’s going to get better if you have a special someone to share it with.

Thus, there are double sleeping bags that are designed to accommodate two persons. In this article, you’ll learn how to choose the best 2 person sleeping bag for you and your camping partner.

Why A Double Sleeping Bag?

Many folks would agree that camping is the best third date in the world. There’s nothing better than spending quality time in the great outdoors with somebody close to your heart. When you are camping with your special someone, you’d probably want nothing more than to be snuggling all the time.

Double Sleeping Bag

Sure, you can purchase separate sleeping bags but it’s really not the same, is it? With a two person sleeping bag, you can benefit from each other’s body heat by being very close to each other.

One of the main concerns with a two person sleeping bag is the weight. Fortunately, companies have the manufacturing technology to save on weight that could still pave the way for light backpacking. If you love camping with your partner, it’s highly recommended that you invest in a two person sleeping bag.

How to Choose The Right Two Person Sleeping Bag?

Obviously, you would want a double sleeping bag that can provide you with the best comfort.

However, comfort alone is not the only factor to consider when choosing the right two person sleeping bag. Take into account these factors when shopping for a double sleeping bag:

  • Shape: Sleeping bags keep you warm by trapping and capturing the dead air next to the body. A person’s body heat will warm this dead air and the sleeping bag will serve as the barrier between the body and the outside air and cold ground.
Basically, the less dead air to heat, the faster you’ll warm up and stay warm which is why shape is a very important factor to consider. Most double sleeping bags are designed to comfortably sleep two people.
If you want to snuggle close with your companion, you can check out a roomy double-wide bag. You can combine it with a sleeping pad or air mattress for maximum warmth and comfort.
  • Insulation type: Perhaps the most common sleeping bag insulation type is synthetic. Most campers and hikers opt for synthetic bags simply because they strike a good balance between performance and price tag. Synthetic fill includes many advantages like quick drying, durable, less expensive, and has non-allergic properties.
There’s also the goose-down insulation type that provides more durability and compressible but it’s more expensive. Another type is the water-resistant down insulation which is great for packing down and warmer than synthetic but it does lose its insulating power once it gets wet.
  • When and where: Another factor that you should consider when buying a double sleeping bag is the season and conditions that you are planning to use the sleeping bag in.
For example, if you’re camping in summer, your double sleeping bag doesn’t need to be warmer than 35 degrees F. If you’re going camping during fall, the bag doesn’t need to be warmer than 15 degrees F. During the dead of winter, a subzero double bag is a must but this also depends on where you are. Consider how hot or cold it is in your destination and buy accordingly.
  • Fit: Once you have decided on the shape you want for your sleeping bag, you have to make sure that it’s a good fit for both of you. As mentioned, if you have too much space, you won’t heat up as quickly.
On the other hand, if the bag is too tight for both of you, the insulation tends to be compressed, which also affects the bag’s ability to keep you warm.
As a rule of thumb, make sure that you test out the sleeping bag before purchasing it. Makes sense, especially when sleeping bags can be a significant investment. The last thing you’ll want is an ill-fitting sleeping bag.
  • Weight and packed size: In general, camping sleeping bags are heavier than products made from backpacking. They also tend to be not as compact and compressed when stowed. This is even more applicable when it comes to two person sleeping bags.
It’s a good thing that sleeping manufacturers have found ways to save on weight and make their products more packed-friendly. If you go for synthetic insulation, expect that it will be heavier and less compressible when compared to products with down insulation.
Thus, two person sleeping bags are ideal for couples who love to go car camping where the extra weight and bulkiness is not an issue. For many folks, the comfort and coziness is worth the extra bulk and weight.

With these guidelines, we hope that you now have a good idea when it comes to shopping for a double bag that’s right for you.

The North Face dolomite is an amazing addition to my camping gear. Works well and locks in heat right in your area. They stuff easily into the storage sack and the zippers work quite well without snagging. I like them a lot. Also, can be unzipped into two separate bags.

  • Daniel Carraway

Good choice on this quality gear Ursula. I’ve been camping since I was a kid and when I grew older, the North Face brand has been a favorite. It’s very reliable and their products continue to improve. The company is really innovative and that made them popular with a lot of campers and outdoor lovers.

  • Jack Wilcox

I’ve had the North Face Dolomite for a while now. Whilst it is a large bag, I can’t help but feel two single bags zipped together would be a better option. I’ve done some research and found that most bags from the same brand will fit together so I’m thinking I might try this out. Despite it’s large size it does compact quite a bit when packed though two smaller bags will probably take up less space. May seem like I really hate the Dolomite – which I don’t – I just feel two bags is a better option. Any thoughts?

  • Daniel Carraway

It really depends on your preference. Some people I know might find that having two bags are not that compact compared to a single large bag. Yet, some of my friends find that if you’re camping alone, a double sleeping bag is way too big! With 2 separate ones, you can leave the other bag at home.
