The amount of air in your bike’s tires is important. You don’t want to inflate them too full and you don’t want to leave them low on air. Both of these factors can lead to bursting a tire, leaving you on the side of the road without a form of transportation.

In order to keep this from happening to you, it is important to invest in a tire pump that is accurate and reliable. Once you find the best bike floor pump for your bike, your life will be that much easier. Below are a few features to look for in a pump that will keep you moving through life.

What Features Should I Look for in A Bike Pump?

Though the list is short and sweet, if you find a bike pump that possesses all or a majority of these features, you can be sure that your pump will last you some years. Not to mention keeping your bike’s tires on the pavement.

The Materials

Consider the materials of the pump you are purchasing before the price. Though you may see a plastic pump that is selling for a bargain price, it will not be worth even the low amount it is selling for in a week or two. Consider metal or steel pumps that have replaceable parts. These pumps are sturdy and long lasting.

The Base

Take a look at the base of the pump. If there isn’t a fixed or fold-up foot base on your bike pump, you are sure to run into some problems when you are trying to fill up your tires. A sturdy base gives the entire pump stability and the ability to perform its purpose.

5 Different type of pump base

Accurate Pressure Gauging

Make sure you buy an air pump that has accurate pressure gauging. This is key to keeping your bike on the road. If you are unaware of the pressure that is in your tires, you will not be able to ride your bike to its full potential. You will also want to make sure you can read your gauge for an easy inflation process.

Fitting Connector

Purchase a pump that has a hose connector (or chuck) that fits your bikes tire valves. Many pumps come with a valve that fits the two main types of valves. Whether you have a Presta or Schrader tire valve, your pump should have a fitting connector.

Price

Just like it is important to avoid underpaying for a bike air pump, you should also avoid overpaying. There are many pumps that are reliable and offer a warranty for affordable prices. The trick is to purchase one pump that will last you for years without spending a fortune.

We got Serfas pump more than a year ago and in my opinion, it is the best brand today. We have used it many times with no issues at all. It works flawlessly and is very sturdy. It also helps that it has automated head that is adjustable. I highly recommend it to everyone.

My personal choice is Topeak II. Here are the things that I like about it: 1. the base is very stable. 2. has a wide handle that features a rubber grip. 3. the air valve is metal. 4. it comes with a ball adapter. We have used this for a couple of months now and so far so good.
